Family Support for Mealtimes

Jaburg & Wilk Feeding Training Series: This series is offered in collaboration with P.O.P.S.I.C.L.E. The framework for this series of trainings will address the interplay of ASD characteristics and the treatment of feeding issues. Participants attending this series will learn about biological factors, traumatic feeding experiences or other behavioral issues that may result in a feeding disorder. Key features of this series will focus on family support intervention using a trandisciplinary approach, options for support emphasizing social emotional development and intervention based on Applied Behavior Analysis with consideration for kids that need to be medically managed.

Guest Presenter: Marsha Dunn Klein, OTR/L, is a pediatric occupational therapist who specializes in feeding disorders with infants and young children. She received her bachelors of science degree from Sargent College of Allied Health Professions of Boston University in 1971 and her Masters of Education from the University of Arizona in 1975. She has published PreFeeding Skills , Mealtime Participation Guide, and Homemade Blended Formula Handbook with Suzanne Evans Morris and Feeding and Nutrition for the Child with Special Needs with Tracy Delaney. She owns Mealtime Notions, LLC (www.mealtimenotions.com) which is a consulting and product distribution company. She is a partner and provides feeding therapy through Mealtime Connections, LLC (www.mealtimeconnections.com) in Tucson, Arizona. This training will explore themes in mealtime issues for the child with autism spectrum disorders. The relationship between sensory processing and narrow diets, rigidity, anxiety, and difficulty with change and need for routine will all be discussed We will look at the influence of these mealtime issues on family dynamics and discuss ways to incorporate multiple food exposures into the daily routine for incidental learning as well as specific learning strategies for expanding diet
