If your child is younger than 3 years, contact the Arizona Early Intervention Program (AzEIP) at (602) 532-9960 or on the web. A free evaluation will be conducted by a contracted psychologist and could possibly qualify the child for ongoing services.
If your child is 3 or older your school district will do a free assessment for placement to determine eligibility for school-based services and supports. You should also contact the DDD (Division of Developmental Disabilities) at (602) 542-0419 or toll free at (866) 229-5553 and ask for the children’s intake unit for your area. It will be necessary to have either a psychologist, psychiatrist or developmental pediatrician do a formal diagnosis of autism or at risk for autism to access services through DDD and receive state funding for home based services.
Private insurance companies often will cover a developmental screening, but consult your list of providers and obtain prior authorization, as needed. If you are in doubt, call the company's patient relations coordinator.
